Stretching is overrated…or so some people say. Right?
Nope, that’s totally wrong. Stretching is probably one of the best things you can do for your body. You don’t have to be a super active person or a professional dancer to make stretching a priority. It’s something that our bodies crave and need to function. Here’s why.
Our bodies need to stretch in order for our muscles to remain strong, flexible, and mobile. According to David Nolan, a physical therapist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital, "A lot of people don't understand that stretching has to happen on a regular basis. It should be daily,". When we don’t stretch our muscles become tight and our joints lose range of motion. If you are someone who works out regularly, you should be stretching before your workout, and most importantly after. Worked out muscles need recovery and the best way to do that is to stretch them out. This will also help prevent severe soreness or discomfort in the body.
Think of your body as a car in the winter. When your car sits in the cold, you need to warm up the engine before you drive off at full speed. Your body needs to warm up and stretch in order to go at full speed.
Some people may hate stretching because they are not very flexible, it may feel weird or uncomfortable, or it could seem boring. While stretching could be a bit uncomfortable at first, it should never hurt. If your muscles are super tight, then you could feel some discomfort from your body trying to loosen up.
