Unlocking the Secret to True Wellness Through Our Second Brain
Welcome back to this months series of balance! Ever felt like our brain’s running a marathon while your body’s stuck in bed? Or maybe we have experienced the opposite—our body’s all revved up, but our mind feels like it’s still hitting the snooze button? That, my friend, is what happens when our mind and body are out of balance. It’s as if they’ve had a fight and are no longer on speaking terms.
Mental imbalance often shows up as anxiety, stress, brain fog, or constant worry. When that happens, the body feels the consequences—think fatigue, tension, digestive issues, or even weird aches and pains you can’t quite explain. It’s not magic; it’s science. Our mental state affects our physical health, and vice versa. Chronic stress throws both the mind and body out of balance. Practicing journaling, spending time in nature, or engaging in hobbies that bring joy can help alleviate stress. Creating healthy boundaries with work and personal life also fosters a balanced state of being.
Gut Feeling? More Like Gut Thinking!
Here’s a fun fact that’ll blow your mind (and possibly your stomach): your gut is often referred to as our “second brain.” No, it doesn’t help you solve math problems, but it does play a significant role in our mood. If our gut is unhappy, it sends distress signals up to your brain, resulting in mood swings, anxiety, and even depression. This is because the gut produces a whopping 90% of your serotonin—a feel-good neurotransmitter that keeps your mood in check.
So, next time we are feeling irritable for no apparent reason, it might not be your inbox or your partner—it could be our gut throwing a temper tantrum because you ate that mystery meat burrito last night.
Signs We Are Out of Balance
Mental Strain: Overwhelm, irritability, or that frustrating feeling of being on edge.
Physical Sluggishness: Low energy, poor digestion, and muscle tension.
Emotional Rollercoaster: Mood swings that have you laughing one minute and teary-eyed over a TV commercial the next.
Feed Our Mind by Feeding Our Gut
If our gut’s out of balance, so is your brain. Keep our gut flora happy by incorporating probiotics and fiber-rich foods into our diet. Think yogurt, sauerkraut, or your grandma’s favorite fermented pickles. Your gut is like a picky roommate—you’ve got to keep it stocked with good bacteria, or it’s going to start acting up. Sometimes, we are not exposed to enriched probiotic foods so supplementation is necessary. A well-balanced diet fuels both the body and mind. Nutritional deficiencies, especially in B-vitamins, magnesium, and Omega-3 fatty acids, can lead to mental fog, low energy, and emotional instability. Eating whole foods rich in essential nutrients supports mental clarity, emotional health, and physical vitality. Don’t let yourself get hangry and absorb your vitamins!!
Move Our Body, Free Our Mind
Exercise isn’t just about fitting into those jeans; it’s about releasing endorphins (aka your brain’s happy pills) and reducing cortisol (your body’s stress hormone). Activities like Real Riddim dance workout on our YouTube , yoga, stretching, stepping out of our comfort zone with a choreography class , or even a brisk walk can realign our mind and body. Think of exercise like hitting the reset button on your brain. Plus, that post-workout glow? It’s free. The only thing running faster than our legs will be the endorphins racing through your body.
Get Sleep: The Ultimate Reset
Think of sleep as our body’s nightly maintenance crew. While we are dreaming about far-off vacations or flying, our body and brain are busy repairing themselves. Lack of sleep leads to crankiness, brain fog, and a body that’s more sluggish than a Monday morning without coffee. If sleep were a product, it would be a best-seller, however Magnesium supports healthy sleep cycles and can help you get the well rested sleep you need!
Who doesn’t want to wake up feeling like a refreshed version of themselves? The trick is to treat sleep like your favorite Netflix show—don’t skip the episodes, and aim for at least 7-8 hours of uninterrupted viewing.
Stay Hydrated Like It’s Our Job
Water is life, people! Dehydration can lead to fatigue, poor concentration, and crankiness (you know, like a phone on 1% battery). Keep your body and brain in sync by staying hydrated with electrolytes throughout the day. Drinking a gallon of water a day is the goal! IF we are feeling off, sometimes it’s not that deep—we just need water. Consider it a love letter to your cells, keeping you energized and sane.
Balance is a Dance, Not a Destination
Finding harmony between our mind and body is an ongoing process, much like trying to balance a grocery bag full of delicate eggs—easy to upset, but totally worth it when we get it right. Some days will feel perfectly aligned, and other days…well, let’s just say our gut and your mind might need a little couples counseling. The key is consistency: small, intentional steps every day toward balance.
Embrace the flow, listen to your body, and when in doubt, feed our gut the good stuff. Because when our mind and body are working as a team, you’ll feel more energized, focused, and ready to tackle whatever life throws your way.
See you next week when we talk about life and work balance!
XOXO
